An Optimized Structure for Students at the Health Campus
The building comprises four wings and a central section, each functioning independently in a statically controlled manner. In the wings, the seven-story reinforced concrete structure rests on prestressed frames at the ground floor, thus enabling a column-free basement. In the center of the building, all floors are suspended from the roof, freeing up space on the ground floor and in the basement for circulation areas. Forces are transferred from the ends of the tie rods via diagonals that structure the spaces and the triangular stairwells.
Horizontal stability is ensured by facade elements. Along the length of the wings, two diagonals located at the ground floor extend into the basement walls. At the ends of the wings, "Eiffel Towers" stabilize the building in response to the moment diagram of a fixed element.
Thanks to the optimized spans, the slab thickness could be reduced to 25 cm. Horizontal stabilization is ensured by diagonals integrated into the facade, thus avoiding the need for CO₂-intensive structural cores. Numerous optimizations and the static design reduce the amount of materials required and, consequently, the building's ecological footprint.
